The S440 optimizer works by optimizing the output of each individual panel since the output per panel can vary due to age, shadow, or orientation. When the solar panels are connected in a string configuration, this means loss of output from the total string.
 

Operation of SolarEdge S440 optimizer

The optimizer is installed on the connection box of each solar panel. The optimizer monitors the panel's output in real time by measuring the panel's current, voltage, and temperature. This information is used to optimize the panel's power by adjusting the DC voltage and current to the panel's maximum power point (MPP).
The optimizer communicates with the SolarEdge inverter, which in turn communicates with a monitoring platform that provides real-time data and performance analysis of the system. The SolarEdge S440 optimizer also provides additional safety features, such as automatic shutdown in case of an error or fire, and arc detection to prevent electrical sparks.
